Over the past year, I have worked on a variety of different films. I have made sure to help other people with their films and projects, and gain experience for my portfolio. As well as working on my own films, I also worked on projects such as Dirigo, Tokyo World, Salmagundi, Peripheral, and In Your Shadow. These were all very useful, as I had applied for a different job role on each production. Such as set designer, first AD, and camera operator.
If I heard that anyone needed help on their films, or if they asked me for help, I would make sure to try and assist them. Even if it was a role I didn’t have much experience in, I knew that it would still be helpful in some way. One example is Tokyo World. I did not have much experience in set designing, other than on my own films. But I agreed to help out, as I knew it would be a good experience to gain. Trying new things, whether I’m good at them or not, is still a good way to learn from them. It also helps bulk up my portfolio with a variety of different jobs. It is my responsibility to try and find jobs for myself in the industry. A good way of finding jobs is through Cahootify. This is a website where you can showcase your own films, similar to a portfolio, but also apply for specific roles on a film. If anyone was in need of a camera operator or a first AD and uploaded that on to Cahootify, then I would be able to apply for it through the website. This makes it easier for me to find jobs, so I don’t always have to rely on people in my class, or other people asking me. Another good way to find jobs is by building a good contact book of people from the industry, keeping social and in contact with people makes it more likely that they will offer you jobs first before anyone else. This is more likely if they believe that you will actually be good at the job, but keeping on good terms with people that are constantly making films, is a good way to try and join their filming crew.
When working on a production, I made sure to listen to whatever the crew or the client would ask of me, and make whatever they asked possible. For the film Peripheral, my client was Billie-Joe Ingrams. He had a shot list that he wanted me follow, as well as providing filming equipment, such as a camera and tripod. I made sure to follow his shot list as carefully as possible, as well as him being present so I could ask him any questions. We worked very well together and he was happy with my finished work. He felt was finished work was as intended, and I believe I worked well with what he asked. On the set of the film In your Shadow, Clay Sandford was my client. As I was working for him, I had to do as he told me, though I was also working as his assistant director, so that was a part of the job anyways. I had to keep an eye on the schedule, and make sure the cast and crew were aware of what they were doing. But at the same time, I had to make sure that Clay was happy with everything that was going on, and if not then I would have to do something about it. I believe we worked well together, and I did everything he asked, such as hurrying everyone up when he was ready, and telling builders to be quiet when he didn’t like the noise.
I began building my portfolio online, through the websites Poool and Cahootify. I use these regularly as they are a good way to update your current films. Cahootify is more useful, as it helps you list your films, date them, as well as tag your cast and crew. Other people can also see your films, as well as apply for them if you are still in the filming process. This is a good way of finding cast and crew, as they can apply through the website. It is then possible to hold auditions if several people have applied that you are interested in. I also created a showreel of my work, which I have uploaded onto my portfolios. This is a good way to showcase my work in a small amount of time, by showing my favourite shots of the films that i have worked on, as well as listing what job roles I have worked on. This has been uploaded publicly for other people to see, so it is possible that someone could contact me if they were interested in the work I do, and would want to work with me. This if the same for my portfolios, if anyone likes the look of the films that I have uploaded, or have seen me in someone else's crew list, they would contact me through there. I have also created a CV which can be shown to people that have contacted me, or can be used to be sent to people that I have contacted. This is useful as it may have more personal details that the showreel or portfolio cannot contain. This is a good way of getting myself into the industry.
I believe I have worked hard to try and build up my portfolio of work. I put myself out there in the industry, and tried new roles that i might not have felt comfortable doing originally. I have made sure to make my social media presence as professional as possible, as well as keeping it constantly updated. Though it is possible I could have tried other ways, as I did not work on any many films as I intended. I could have applied for films through Cahootify if I needed to gain any more experience, though I decided not to.
Overall, I am proud of the experience that I have gained by working on other films, and found them all very helpful. I tried a variety of different roles, and it helped out my online portfolio which could increase my chances of getting into the media industry.
